On the evening of 9 May, the Belmond Royal Scotsman was still on our itinerary; we’d chosen a spot near Newmill to watch it. Just a few minutes after we arrived at the spot, the chestnut-brown Class 66, pulling the 70-year-old carriages, came round the bend.
