On the way to our next destination, we were stopped twice at checkpoints by the Gendarmerie Royale, also known as the race organisers. When asked where we were heading, we always replied, ‘El Aioun’. The officers didn’t quite believe us, as we answered ‘no’ briefly when asked follow-up questions about whether we had family or friends there. Despite their deep mistrust and without any bribery, the officers let us go, and we were then able to line up for the Al Atlas to Oujda on the outskirts of the small town.
