On the eve of 8 March 2025, I was informed by an unofficial source at the DB Ministry that a locomotive from the V160 family would be operating on the Upper Rhine between Basel and Friedrichshafen. So, after a relaxed night shift, I set off for the large canton. By the time I reached Singen, however, I received the disappointing news that the iconic locomotive – built by Krupp, Henschel, Krauss-Maffei and MaK – had suffered a mechanical fault and had therefore been replaced by a locomotive manufactured by Bombardier. However, it was already too late to turn back to Switzerland, so I travelled on to Stahringen anyway, adopting the motto ‘a diesel locomotive is better than no diesel locomotive at all’, and was able to photograph the train, which had a faded carriage from the Südostbayernbahn at the front.
